What is Fagu Purnima — Holi?

Holi — known as Fagu Purnima in Nepal — is the festival of colours celebrating the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. In Nepal's hills, it is celebrated one day before the Terai. The celebrations begin with Chir — a ceremonial pole erected at Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu — and end with a bonfire on Holika Dahan night. The next morning everyone fills the streets throwing colours and water.

History & Significance ·

Holi commemorates the story of Prahlad and Holika from the Bhagavata Purana. The demon king Hiranyakashipu tried to kill his son Prahlad for worshipping Vishnu. His sister Holika — who had a boon of fire immunity — sat in a fire with Prahlad. But Prahlad was saved by Vishnu and Holika burned. The bonfire of Holika Dahan commemorates this story.
