What is Maha Shivaratri?
Maha Shivaratri — the Great Night of Shiva — is one of the most sacred nights in the Hindu calendar. Millions of devotees from Nepal and India gather at Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, the most sacred Shiva temple in the world. Devotees fast all day, stay awake all night, and chant Om Namah Shivaya. Sadhus from across South Asia come to Pashupatinath, making it one of the most extraordinary spiritual gatherings on Earth.

History & Significance ·
Shivaratri commemorates the night when Shiva performed the Tandava — the cosmic dance of creation, preservation and destruction. It is also believed to be the night of Shiva and Parvati's marriage. The festival has been celebrated at Pashupatinath for over 1500 years. Nepal is the only Hindu kingdom that has preserved this tradition in its purest form.
