What is Tihar?

Tihar is the festival of lights and one of the most beautiful festivals in Nepal. Lasting five days, each day honours a different creature or person — crows, dogs, cows, oxen, and finally brothers. The highlight is Laxmi Puja on the third day when every home is lit with oil lamps to welcome the goddess of wealth. The air smells of marigold garlands and the sky fills with fireworks.

History & Significance ·

Tihar coincides with Diwali celebrated across South Asia. In Nepal it has unique traditions — the worship of crows and dogs is distinctly Nepali and not found elsewhere. The Newari community celebrates it as Swanti, with their own special rituals. The Deusi Bhailo singing tradition — groups going house to house singing and receiving blessings — is centuries old.
